Binge drinking varies from one in ten adults (10.9 percent) at the low end of the spectrum to more than one in four (25.6 percent) at the high end. There is something of a binge drinking belt across the north of the country, running westward from New England, Pennsylvania and Ohio to Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota and Montana. Alaska ranks high too, suggesting that long, cold winters might play a role, though tropical Hawaii is in the top tier as well.

Mapping London Riots, ‘Deprivation’

mattstiles:

This interactive map, made with Google Fusion Tables, shows recent riot locations in greater London as red points. The colors represent “indices of deprivation” by “lower super output areas,” which appear similar to blocks or tracts in the U.S. Census. Deeper reds represent higher poverty, while blues represent more income.

I now own this tshirt by Oaklandish.  The boyfriend complains that its not a factually accurate map.  I don’t mind as much and think its pretty awesome anyway.

Mapping the Nation’s Well-being, courtesy of the New York Times.  Its an interesting map, but what I find even more interesting are the questions that they used to gather their data.  For instance, the “learning” metric is evaluated based on the question, “did you learn or do something interesting yesterday?”  And where is the happiest place? The rust belt.

“This figure shows the strongest 80% of links, as measured by total talk time, between areas within Britain. The opacity of each link is proportional to the total call time between two areas and the different colours represent regions identified using network modularity optimisation analysis.”
A pretty interesting display of neighborhoods and the relationships they create. Via.
